Office workers who frequently need to show their identification to get in and out of their building or floor often carry their badge on a retractable reel. The reel keeps the badge handy and available when needed while keeping it from getting lost in a pocket or handbag. Badge reels are fairly plain and if you're going to be wearing it every day, you may want to jazz it up with a personal touch. Use a button maker to add a monogram, name or image of your choice to your ID badge reel.
Things You'll Need
- Retractable badge reel
- Circle punch or rotary cutter
- Image, monogram or name on paper or fabric
- Button making machine
- Button front
- Button back
Choose an image for your badge reel. You may print out a monogram, embroider your initial on a piece of fabric, or customize it with your name or the emblem of your alma mater or favorite sports team. The image or monogram you select should fit within the diameter of your button.
Cut out the image using a circle punch or rotary cutter. You should cut a circle the same size as your button.
Place the button front, image and button back into your button making machine. Follow your machine's directions to make a button.
Glue the button to the retractable badge reel using the glue, attaching it so the button faces outward when you clip the reel to your belt loop or pocket. Choose a glue designed to attach metal to plastic, as you will want the button to stay glued on.
Tips & Warnings
- Circle punches are easy to use, and you can find inexpensive ones at scrapbooking or craft stores.
- Button making machines usually make buttons of only one size. Determine which size your button making machine makes before beginning.
