With a little planning, you can open a business quickly.

Starting your own business can be something you do for a little extra money or something you do to make a living. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to make a business successful, but it doesn't have to take years to get started. By keeping things simple and building as you go, you can start a business quickly and easily.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a list of business ideas. Start by making a list of things you know how to do well. Whatever your expertise is, there's a good chance that someone is willing to pay for it.

    • 2

Write out a marketing plan. Once you have your idea, you have to determine how you are going to reach your target. If you are going to start a babysitting business, perhaps you could reach out to your local parenting group for leads. If you're going to start a web design business, perhaps joining your local Chamber of Commerce would be beneficial. Write down ideas on how you are going to get the word out about your business.

    • 3

Register your business name. If you want to get started on your business quickly, skip incorporation until you've had time to research all of your options. Instead, opt for filing a DBA, or Doing Business As form with your county. This will allow you to use a trade name for your business. If you don't want to do this, you can do business in your name only. For example, you can do business as Jan Smith, Accountant, without filing any paperwork but not if you want to be Jan's Jazzy Accounting Service.

    • 4

Obtain any necessary supplies. Purchase any supplies you'll need to run your business. This includes business cards, marketing materials, software and any other tools. If you keep it to the basics, you can save a lot of time and money.

    • 5

Open your business. Start by telling everyone you know that you are open for business. Then begin to get the word out by following your marketing plan. It might take awhile to get things off the ground, but don't let that discourage you.

Tips & Warnings

  • It's a good idea to keep your business money separate from your personal money. Even if you only plan on running a very small operation, you should keep things separate for tax purposes. Your local banking institution should be able to help you find an account suitable for your needs.

  • Check the legalities of any business you plan to run. You need to know if you'll need any special licenses or credentials.
