How to Remove an Intake Manifold Gasket

Because the intake manifold gasket is exposed to extreme temperatures when the engine is running, it can begin to crack and deteriorate over time. When this happens, it will begin to allow fluids to leak out of the engine, creating serious problems. Removing the intake manifold gasket to replace the part is a job that can be done in about three to four hours. You can save time and money by doing the work yourself.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Unfasten the negative battery cable of the vehicle from the battery post with an open-end wrench before attempting to remove the intake manifold gasket. Place a drain pan on the ground underneath the drain valve of the radiator and take the cap off the radiator.

    • 2

Open the drain valve at the bottom of the radiator on the passenger side with a pair of pliers one complete turn and let the radiator drain completely. Unfasten the screw clamp on the radiator hose that connects to the engine block with a screwdriver and remove the hose from the engine block.

    • 3

Take the cover of the top of the engine with a socket wrench and set the cover aside. Unplug the electrical connectors that run across the top of the intake manifold and lay them out of the way, making a note of how to reattach the connectors.

    • 4

Unfasten the bolts on the sides of the intake plenum over the manifold, that secure the plenum to the brackets with a socket wrench and disconnect the vacuum lines from the plenum with an open-end wrench.

    • 5

Detach the intake ducts from the throttle body next to the carburetor with pliers and unplug the PCV valve from the top of the intake manifold cover. Disconnect the EGR valve mounting bolts from the intake plenum with a socket wrench and move the valve aside.

    • 6

Unfasten the center bolts that secure the air plenum to the intake manifold with a socket wrench and unplug the temperature sensor electrical connector and vacuum hose from the air plenum. Move the air plenum over on top of the driver's side fender so it is out of the way and unfasten the fuel rails from the top of the intake manifold cover with a socket wrench.

    • 7

Loosen the eight intake manifold bolts with a socket wrench and set the bolts out of the way. Lift the intake manifold off the engine block and gently turn it over. Remove the intake manifold gasket from the bottom of the intake mainfold.

Tips & Warnings

  • To avoid burns, always let the engine cool down before attempting to remove the intake manifold gasket.
