How to Text to an iPhone From a Mac

At times, you may want to text a friend on her iPhone without leaving your computer. Using iChat, a text and video messaging application developed by Apple, you can send text messages from your Mac computer to iPhone users. You can also receive text replies from iPhones within your iChat window. iChat is pre-installed on all Mac computers.

Instructions

      Open iChat on your Mac computer and log in using your username and password.

      Select "Send SMS" from the "File" menu. The Send SMS Message window appears.

      Type the iPhone cell phone number in the phone number field. You do not need to enter a "1" . The "+1" is already entered for you at the beginning of the field.

      Click OK. A Chat window appears. At the top of the window is the iPhone number which will receive the text.

      Enter your text message at the bottom of window in the smiley face blank text field.

      Press "Enter" to send your message. A purple auto-reply message appears in the Chat window stating that your text was sent.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can only send text messages from your Mac to iPhone users in the United States.
