How to Make a Thin Client Boot for VMware

A thin client is a computer with minimal hardware and no operating system. VMware supports starting and working with a virtual machine using a thin client. VMware supports two methods of starting a thin client--preboot execution environments (PXE) and USB keys. A thin client can send a request over the network using PXE, which the VMware server responds to and opens a virtual machine selection screen. The user can also start the thin client with a special USB key or drive.

Instructions

    • 1

Log in to the VMware server with an administrative account.

    • 2

Click the "Start" menu, type "cmd.exe" in the search field and press "Enter." This will open a Command Prompt window. The Command Prompt window is used to enter text-based commands, in this case for the VMware server.

    • 3

Type the following command, then press "Enter":

vmrc -n enable -f PXE USB

This command enables starting a thin client using PXE or USB. If you only need to use one or the other, just enter the one you plan to use at the end of the command. PXE users don't need to enter anything else. To use USB, continue to the next step.

    • 4

Plug a blank USB drive into the VMware server. The drive should be 32 MB or larger.

    • 5

Click the "Start" menu, click "All Programs" and move to the "VMware" folder, then click "Thin Client USB Utility."

    • 6

Click the "Start Copy" button to create the USB key. The key is automatically ejected when the program finishes. You can then unplug the USB drive and close the program, or insert another USB drive to create another key. To start the thin client using the key, plug the USB drive into the thin client, then power it on.
