How to Replace a 2003 Chevy Cavalier Power Window Motor

The power window system in a 2003 Chevy Cavalier uses an electric window motor to replace the old manual window crank in order to move the window regulator up or down. Once the regulator moves, the window glass moves with it to open or close the window, based on the input from the window switch. If the Cavalier's window motor short circuits or seizes, you'll lose control of the window until you replace the motor. If your Cavalier needs a new window motor and you have basic auto-repair skills, you can tackle this job in about an hour.

Things You'll Need

• Trim tool
• Phillips screwdriver
• Packing tape
• Socket set

Instructions

1. Remove the Cavalier's window switch and lock switch from the door panel by prying them out with the trim tool. Unplug both switches from the wiring connectors by hand.

2. Remove the screws holding the Cavalier's door panel to the door with the Phillips screwdriver. Lift the door panel up and off the door before setting it aside.

3. Reach into the Cavalier's door with both hands and lift the window glass to the top of the channel. Tape the glass to the top of the Cavalier's door with packing tape to hold it in place.

4. Unplug the Cavalier's wiring connector from the body of the old window motor by hand. Extract the bolts holding the old motor to the door and window regulator using the socket set. Remove the Cavalier's old motor from the door by hand.

5. Insert the Cavalier's new window motor into the door by hand. Bolt the motor to the regulator and door using your socket set. Plug the wiring connector into the new motor by hand.

6. Reinstall the Cavalier's door panel in reverse of how you removed it.
