Low-income residents in Georgia can receive assistance with purchasing food from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). SNAP benefits are deposited each month on a electronic benefits transfer card. The card, known as the EBT card, is also used for recipients of cash assistance from Temporary Assistance for Needy Families. The card can be used at grocery stores and supermarkets. You can also use the card to withdraw money from certain locations.

Apply for food stamps or cash assistance at your local Division of Family and Children Services office (see Resources). You will need to provide your personal information, such as your Social Security number and date of birth. You will also need to provide income information. Submit your completed application to the DFCS office.

Attend your eligibility interview. You will be scheduled for the interview when you submit your application. A caseworker will evaluate whether you qualify for food stamps. If you are approved for food stamps or cash assistance, you will receive a determination letter in the mail.

Wait for your Georgia EBT card in the mail. Your card will be imprinted with 16-digits. The digits are your card's personal identification number. Merchants will use the number to deduct charges.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you lose your EBT card, you can get a replacement card by calling (888) 421-3281. You will need to provide the EBT representative with your Social Security number and date of birth when calling.
