How to Change the Differential Oil in a 2005 Jetta With Automatic Transmission
Along with tune ups and oil changes, checking and changing the differential oil, or fluid, in your 2005 Volkswagen Jetta should be a part of regular maintenance. The differential on your Jetta is responsible for spinning the car's wheels and regulating the downshifting in your automatic transmission. In order to do this, gears inside the differential box spin regularly. Differential fluid keeps those gears and moving parts spinning smoothly. Over time, old differential fluid needs to be changed.

1
Place your Jetta in park and engage your emergency brake. Jack up the rear end and place jack stands under the rear frame. Lower your Jetta down so that it rests firmly on the jack stands.
-
2
Locate your Jetta's differential. It is a small cylindrical-shaped object mounted on the transfer case on the drive shaft.

-
3
Remove the drain plug with a socket set and allow the fluid to drain into the drip pan. The drain plug will be located at the bottom center of the transfer case on your Jetta.
-
4
Attach the hand pump to the differential oil. Hand pumps vary from model to model, so follow the instructions on your hand pump to attach it to the differential fluid container.
-
5
Place the tube end of the hand pump into the differential drain plug hole and pump the differential oil in until it is full.
-
6
Screw the plug back in after the differential fluid level is full. Tighten the drain plug with your socket set.
