How to Clean Chalk Out of Upholstery


Chalk is a type of calcium carbonate that flakes and powders easily. This makes is useful for writing on surfaces such as chalkboards, but it also makes it easy to accidentally smudge chalk onto other surfaces. If you happen to get chalk on your upholstery, don't panic. You can remove chalk from upholstered surfaces fairly easily using the proper technique.

Things You'll Need

  • Dry cleaning solvent
  • Cloths
  • Apply dry cleaning solvent to a clean, white cloth. Most dry cleaning solvents are composed mainly of the chemical perchloroethylene, which works to dissolve many organic substances

  • Dab the solvent onto the chalk stain.

  • Blot the area dry with another clean cloth.

  • Repeat this procedure until the stain is gone.

Tips & Warnings

  • Dry cleaning solvents are safe for most fabrics. If you are in doubt whether you can use the solvent on your particular fabric, contact the manufacturer of the furniture item first. If you get chalk on leather furniture, you can remove it simply by wiping it down with a damp cloth.
