How to Use Thill Floats

How to Use Thill Floats thumbnail
Thill is a brand of fishing bobber.

Thill is a brand of fishing bobbers, or floats, manufactured by the Lindy company. They make several types of floats, including slip floats, spring floats and lighted floats for night fishing. Most of the Thill floats are made from balsa wood, but you can find a few foam or plastic models, depending on price and function. The rigging method depends on the type of float, and each float comes with rigging instructions on the packaging.

Instructions

  1. Attaching Floats

    • 1

Clip spring floats directly to the fishing line. They have a spring mounted on the bottom of the stem that covers a notch. Pull back the spring, insert the line into the notch, then release the spring. You may have to wrap the line around more than once to keep it from slipping.

    • 2

Attach a bobber stop to the line for sliding floats, then thread a bead onto the line. This will keep the float from sliding past the stop. Insert the line into the hole at the top of the float, then draw it out the bottom. Tie a swivel onto the line once it has gone through the float to keep it from sliding down too far.

    • 3

Attach Thill Gold Medal floats with the supplied O-rings. Slide one or two O-rings onto the line, depending on the size of the float. Tie the line below as you normally would. The O-rings slide onto the float, trapping the line between the ring and the side of the float and keeping it in place.

    • 4

Add weight to the float until the water level is even with the line on the float. This means the float is properly balanced.

Tips & Warnings

  • The less resistance the fish feels when pulling the float under, the less likely it is to drop the bait.
