How do I Troubleshoot a 1986 Honda Accord LX Clutch or Pedal?
Though the 1986 Honda Accord offers a strong engine and Honda's legendary Honda, the car can develop problems with its clutch. Not only can the clutch plates wear and slip, but the clutch cable can stretch, break or bind in its cover. You may be able to diagnose the problem before heading to a mechanic.

1
Check the pedal to ensure it travels properly. If the pedal stays down on the floor, the cable may have broken or the pedal may have come unhooked from the clutch cable. Examine the pedal to check whether it remains attached. If the pedal is attached but feels loose, you must replace the clutch cable.
-
2
Press the clutch pedal again. If you feel excessive resistance, the cable may be binding inside its cover or the pedal may be catching on something. Examine the pedal, and move each part with your finger until you find the sticky link.

3
Drive the car with the clutch engaged, and press the gas pedal. If the engine revs up but the car does not move any faster, the clutch is slipping. You may have worn clutch plates or oil contamination inside the clutch, or it may be releasing improperly. You must remove the clutch, examine it further and possibly replace it.
-
4
Stop the car and start it again, slipping the clutch slowly. If the clutch grabs or jerks, it may indicate improper alignment, or burnt or glazed plates. Again, you must perform further diagnosis after removing the clutch from the car.
-
5
Stop the car and check whether it stalls or the engine strains to move the car forward; both are symptoms of the clutch not disengaging fully. A broken release mechanism, broken or bent release fork or worn bushings may prevent the clutch from releasing properly; in this case, again, you must remove the clutch and examine it for further diagnosis.

Tips & Warnings
Most manufacturers recommend replacing the whole clutch as a unit and resurfacing the flywheel for the best results. A part failure may result from wear in a different part. Replacing only the failed part will not solve the problem.
Replace a clutch showing signs of failure; otherwise, it can leave you stranded.
