How to Remove the Wheel Bearing on a 1999 Ford F150

The 1999 Ford F-150 wheel bearing check, repack and adjustments are recommended every 30,000 miles or 24 months. This procedure can be done at home, using common automotive tools. Removing the wheel bearings takes a few minutes, but accessing the wheel bearings takes a little longer, as the brakes have to be taken off and moved out of the way. The entire job, including bearing replacement, can be done in less than one day.

Instructions

  1. Instructions

    • 1

Park the truck on level ground and turn off its ignition. Loosen the lug nuts on the wheel you will work on with a lug wrench. Raise the F-150 with a jack. Raise jack stands up to the vehicle's chassis. Lower the truck to the jack stands with the jack. Remove the jack.

    • 2

Remove the lug nuts with the lug wrench. Remove the wheel and put it aside.

    • 3

Remove the brake caliper. Hang the caliper out of the way, using the wire coat hanger.

    • 4

Remove the dust cap from the hub with the screwdriver. Tap it with the hammer to loosen it, if necessary.

    • 5

Straighten the cotter pin legs using the needle-nose pliers and remove the pin from the nut-lock assembly. Always use new cotter pins during reassembly.

    • 6

Remove the nut lock, nut and washer from the spindle by hand. If the spindle is very tight, use the socket or breaker bar to remove it.

    • 7

Pull the hub/disc assembly slightly, but do not remove it. Push it back into the original position, which forces the outer bearing far enough off the spindle to be removed. Pull the hub/disc assembly off the spindle.

    • 8

Remove the seal from the back of the disc, using a screwdriver, noting its removal process as it will need to be reinstalled in the same way.

    • 9

Remove the inner wheel bearing from the disc. Clean and inspect the bearing. If the bearing is in good condition, do not replace it with a new one.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the truck is equipped with air suspension systems, disconnect the power to the system before lifting the truck. Serious injury can occur otherwise.
