How to Keep Glitter From Falling Too Fast When Making Snow Globes

How to Keep Glitter From Falling Too Fast When Making Snow Globes thumbnail
Control how fast the glitter falls in your snow globe.

Snow globes are simple to make and work well for hostess gifts, birthday favors, holiday décor and special collectibles. However, if the glitter falls too fast, the beautiful falling snow effect is lost and your snow globe looks more like a snow dump. Control the rate the glitter falls in your snow globe with a simple ingredient found in hobby and drug stores.

Things You'll Need

  • Glycerin
  • Mineral or baby oil (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Fill your clear jar with distilled water. Leave a little room at the top to add another liquid ingredient, decorations and glitter.

    • 2

Add three drops of glycerin to the distilled water.

    • 3

Add your glitter to the glycerin water.

    • 4

Screw the lid on tightly. Lightly shake the jar and watch the glitter slowly fall to the lid base. If you want the glitter to fall more slowly, add another dash or drop of glycerin.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use mineral oil or baby oil if you don't have glycerin.

  • Do not use too much glycerin, mineral oil or baby oil. This will just gum up the glitter and cause it to stick in a clump to the lid base.
