The more basketball you play, the better you will become.

Good defensive skills are a key component of any good basketball player's arsenal. While scoring may be more exciting, defense is just as important as, if not more fundamental than, strong offensive skills. Defense is synonymous with awareness and anticipation. Knowing your opponent's next move and maintaining good balance can increase your defensive skills exponentially. Regardless of physical limitations, every basketball player can take measures to become better defenders.

Instructions

    • 1

Stand with your feet shoulder width apart and keep your knees slightly bent. Keep one hand low to guard the ball and keep another hand high to be ready to block a shot or high pass.

    • 2

Keep your eyes on your opponent's waist. If you see the offender's midsection move in one direction, be prepared to move in that same direction because that is where he is headed. If your eyes are only on the basketball, you can be easily duped since it's incredibly easy to fake a shot or pass.

    • 3

Practice moving side to side. Don't let your feet hit each other and try to develop a fluid side-to-side movement, making your defense quicker.

    • 4

Learn to switch defensive positions with other players instantaneously. If the offense sets a pick, simply call out the word "switch" so your teammate knows to pick up your man and vice versa.
