How to Check the Distance of DSL

How to Check the Distance of DSL thumbnail
DSL connections vary, based on distance from the DSL provider.

DSL, or a digital subscriber line, is one method of connecting a computer to the Internet. It uses special equipment to send the signal through the phone line. It is faster than a modem, and still allows the user to have access to the phone. DSL connection speed varies greatly, based on the distance between the service provider and the place where the DSL is being used.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact the ISP to see if you are within their sphere of DSL service. Technology matters in this case; if your home or office is too far from where the ISP server is located, then you will not be able to use DSL. Speeds vary -- depending on a lot of factors -- and contacting your company to make sure that the service is available is the first step. It is possible that neighbors could have the service, while you do not.

    • 2

Determine whether you are within a certain distance. According to DSLreports.com, any distance less than 5,000 feet should have no problem connecting. More than 5,000 feet up to 16,000 feet will have some trouble, depending on what you want to do. More than that and you will have to find an alternative method of Internet service.

    • 3

Determine from the company if you are able to use DSL service; if you are, continue with steps to determine how fast your speed is.

    • 4

Follow the instructions in your user's manual to be certain that the DSL is connected correctly.

    • 5

Go to any speed test site. Most Internet providers also have one that can be used for free. A speed test site pings your connection signal and tells you just how quick your connection speed is. (see Resources)
