How do I Repair the Brakes on a 2005 Honda Odyssey?
Being a family minivan, the 2005 Honda Odyssey is usually subject to a lot of stop-and-go traffic, or hauling a full load of passengers and cargo. Because of this type of use, the Odyssey's brake pads can wear out in as little as 15,000 miles. With the ever-rising cost of auto repair, this can add up over the life of you vehicle. Fortunately, replacing the front pads on your 2005 Odyssey is something you can do yourself and save money.
Things You'll Need
- Floor jack
- Jack stands
- Open-ended or combination wrench set
- Ratchet
- Socket set
- Torque wrench
- C-Clamp
Instructions
-
-
1
Loosen, but do not remove the lug nuts from the front of the vehicle.
-
2
Raise the front of the vehicle using a floor jack and secure it with jack stands.
-
-
3
Remove the lug nuts and pull the front wheels from the vehicle.
-
4
Look at the rear of the brake caliper and locate the two caliper bolts, one upper and one lower. Notice that the caliper bolts each go through a sleeve -- this sleeve is called the caliper pin.
-
5
Place an open-ended wrench over the lower caliper pin. Loosen and remove the lower caliper bolt with a ratchet and socket, while holding the caliper pin from moving with the wrench.
-
6
Place an open-ended wrench over the upper caliper pin. Loosen, but do not remove, the upper caliper bolt with a ratchet and socket, while holding the caliper pin from moving with the wrench.
-
7
Swing the caliper upward, using the upper caliper bolt as the pivot point. This exposes the old brake pads.
-
8
Grasp the old brake pads and pull them from inside the caliper bracket.
-
9
Place an old brake pad inside the caliper, so that it is contacting the two pistons. Place the C-clamp so that the fixed portion is contacting the rear of the caliper body and the screw portion is touching the old brake pad. Tighten the C-clamp until the brake bad is fully pressed against the calipers body, this presses the piston into the caliper, creating the clearance needed for the new pads.
-
10
Remove the C-clamp and the old brake pad.
-
11
Place the new brake pads into the caliper bracket, just as the old ones came out.
-
12
Pivot the caliper downward and over the new brake pads.
-
13
Hand-tighten the upper and lower caliper bolts.
-
14
Tighten the upper and lower caliper bolts to 37 foot-pounds of torque, using a torque wrench and socket, while holding the caliper pins with a wrench.
-
15
Repeat steps 4 through 14 for the brakes on the other side of the vehicle.
-
16
Place the wheels on the vehicle and hand-tighten the lug nuts.
-
17
Tighten the lug nuts to 80 foot-pounds of torque, using the torque wrench and a socket.
-
18
Remove the Odyssey from the jack stands and lower it to the ground.
-
19
Press and release the brake pedal repeatedly until it feels firm.
