How to Restore Joomla! From Backup

Joomla is software that allows you to make and update webpages. This type of software is referred to as a content management system. Joomla is open source and freely available, and it has been written in PHP. The contents of Joomla are stored in a database instead of in files. When you backup your content from Joomla, you are actually backing up all the content of the Joomla database. To restore your Joomla content, you must use the same method you used to back it up. There are a few different methods and extensions to backup Joomla.

  Backup and restore Joomla using phpMyAdmin. The phpMyAdmin utility is typically installed by your hosting provider within their administration control panels. It is a utility written in PHP that allows you to administer MySQL servers over the Web. If you have a hosting provider offering phpMyAdmin, this is an excellent method to backup and restore your Joomla database. To restore a Joomla database backed up with phpMyAdmin, you will need to access the phpMyAdmin administration page and select the "Import" option, then open the backup file of your database from your drive. This method backs up your Joomla content in the database, but none of your third-party extensions or components.

  Backup and restore Joomla using the Akeeba Backup extension. This extension was formerly known as JoomlaPack. Akeeba creates a full backup of your site in a single archive that includes the Joomla database with all of your content as well as additional components and extensions. Akeeba creates an installer with your backup that will allow you to install the backup in a manner similar to the standard Joomla installer. To restore a Joomla backup made with Akeeba, use a process called kickstart, which allows you to restore directly from a Web browser pointed at the backup files.

This script can be run through any Web browser.
