Following the right techniques will make your sand driving experience a fun one.

Driving a GMC Acadia through beach or desert sand is much different than driving on pavement and requires a different approach. The Acadia handles well in off-road conditions because it is four-wheel drive, but you must keep several factors in mind when driving through sand. Employing a few techniques will help you have an efficient and safe journey.

Instructions

    • 1

Let air out of all four tires by removing the cap from the tire valve and placing the tire gauge over it. Turn the valve downward until the air comes out. The ideal pounds per square inch (psi) is 12 to 15. Use your tire gauge to measure the psi on each tire.

    • 2

Maintain a consistent speed at all times and avoid sudden acceleration or stops.

    • 3

Allow your Acadia to come to a stop on its own if possible. Using the brakes increases the probability of getting stuck.

    • 4

Avoid making quick, sharp turns. Making slower, gradual turns will help you avoid getting stuck in ruts.

    • 5

Accelerate your speed slightly if you are losing traction. You don't want to overdo it and spin your tires; you just want a little extra speed to keep moving.

    • 6

Shovel away sand from your tires using a small shovel if you get stuck. This will help you gain better traction.

Tips & Warnings

  • Refill your tires with the normal 32 psi as soon as possible once you are back on regular pavement. Drive slowly during your trip to the air pump to avoid blowing any tires out.

  • Wait to let the air out of your tires until right before you are going to drive on sand.

  • Never attempt to drive in sand without a four-wheel drive vehicle.
