How to Copy BIOS Settings

How to Copy BIOS Settings thumbnail
The BIOS is a small amount of code that controls basic hardware settings.

The basic input/output system (BIOS) is what allows you to configure hardware functionality on a computer before the operating system loads. This type of program is usually called firmware because it exists persistently on a motherboard. Copying the settings may be necessary if the BIOS has been corrupted, is scheduled to be upgraded or needs some other alteration.

Instructions

    • 1

Download the Universal BIOS Backup Toolkit (see Resources). This file is a .rar, a compressed file that requires a special program to extract the contents. Double-click the file, and it should open with the appropriate unzipping program. In the unzip program, click "Extract here" or "Extract to..." and choose a suitable location.

    • 2

Right-click on the BIOS Backup executable while holding the "Shift" key. This will add the "Run As" option to the context menu. Click "Run As," and then click the second option to run as administrator. Input administrator credentials, and click OK.

    • 3

Click "Read" to scan the computer for the BIOS settings. Click the "Backup" button that is no longer greyed out. This saves the file as a .rom file. Choose a location that is removable in order to copy the BIOS settings.

Tips & Warnings

  • Because this program searches for BIOS information, many anti-malware programs construe this as viruslike activity. Temporarily disable your anti-malware programs to make sure the program can function. Otherwise, you'll receive errors whenever you attempt to run it.
