How to Convert a Box Van to an RV
You can convert a box van to an RV with some work and a plan. Many people consider the idea before buying a used RV. The costs of doing a conversion is expensive if you install new appliances, plumbing and custom cabinets. If you want to do the conversion cheaply, you can build a simple bed and use plastic storage containers. If you are after a custom look, you can build cabinets, install appliances and fit the vehicle with a high-dollar suspension system for a smooth ride.

1
Install a sliding glass door if the cab is not connected to the van. This will allow you to access the living area without exiting the van. Also, cut out and install several windows for light inside the van.
-
2
Install a ventilation system in the roof to allow airflow. Frame the interior of the van with wood and install insulation if you will be camping in the winter. Cover the insulation with wood panels.

3
Build a bed out of 2x4s and plywood. Use brackets to bolt the bed to the floor. Use plastic storage containers to store gear beneath the bed. This will reduce weight and cost by eliminating the need to build storage closets.
-
4
Build a table on the opposite side of the van. Build the table out of 2x4s and plywood and use brackets to bolt it to the ground. Leave enough room in the middle of the van to create a comfortable isle. Store kitchen supplies beneath the table and use a portable stove for cooking.
-
5
Build a base for a propane tank out of 2x4s and plywood. The tank should be stable while driving. You can run a heater or a small refrigerator off the propane.

Tips & Warnings
If you have a large budget, install custom cabinets and plumbing for a sink and shower.
Do not run a propane heater inside the van unless it has a catalytic converter. Always leave a window cracked just in case.
