Maintaining healthy gums requires regular brushing and flossing. Without the proper technique and maintenance, you may develop plaque buildup. Plaque is a colorless, sticky film that coats the surface of your teeth. You can also find plaque between your teeth and under your gums. Left to accumulate, plaque will cause your gums to become red and inflamed and may even lead to gum disease. Take care of your teeth and gums and visit your dentist regularly to keep plaque under control.

      Brush your teeth at least twice a day to remove plaque.

      Perfect the proper brushing technique. Place your brush along the gum line at a 45 degree angle. Brush the surface of each tooth in a vibrating, circular motion. Repeat on the inside surfaces of every tooth. Be sure to maintain contact with your gums while you brush.

      Floss in between your teeth at least once each day. Use about 15 inches of dental floss and wrap the ends around your middle fingers until you have about 2 inches left in between.

      Ease the floss in between each tooth, moving down toward the gums in a zig-zag motion. When you get to the gum, guide the floss around and under the curve of the tooth to clean away plaque from under the gum line.

      Schedule an appointment for professional teeth cleaning with your dentist at least once a year. Your dentist will perform a scaling or manual removal of plaque buildup from the surface of your teeth and below the gums.

Tips & Warnings

  • Visit your dentist every 6 months to keep plaque buildup at bay. Avoid sticky, sugary foods or brush directly after eating them. Floss at least once each day.
