Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement Instructions

Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement Instructions thumbnail
Replacing wiper blades needs to be a routine part of vehicle maintenance.

Replacing your vehicle's windshield wipers is a straightforward task. The blades themselves do not need to be manufacturer-specific parts and wiper blades are generally sold at most discount department stores with automotive departments. These retailers will either have a computer or a catalog where you can look up the size your vehicle needs. Most of the common brands feature center connections that can accommodate a variety of wiper arm styles. Changing the wiper blades should only take a few minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Switch your vehicle's electrical system on and turn the wipers on. Wait until the wipers are at the center of the windshield and then turn the wipers and the electrical system off. This will leave the wipers at the center of the windshield for easy access.

    • 2

Pick a wiper blade and raise it vertically off the vehicle's windshield.

    • 3

Undo the safety clasp at the center of the blade. This is the mechanism that helps keep the wiper blade assembly on the vehicle's wiper arm.

    • 4

Pull the blade out of the center connection. How to do this depends on the type of wiper arm on your vehicle. Small, pin wiper assembles are one of the most notable exceptions, as they can be levered off with a flat-head screwdriver. The most common wiper arm features a hook formed into the letter "J."

    • 5

Line up the replacement blade's center connection with the end of the wiper arm and pull the blade assembly into place and onto the end of the wiper arm. You will hear a solitary "click" sound. That will be the safety clasp snapping into place.

    • 6

Lower the wiper blade to the vehicle's windshield. Repeat these steps on the remaining wiper blade.
