How to Remove The Bed of a Pickup

How to Remove The Bed of a Pickup thumbnail
A pickup truck's bed is attached to the frame with bolts.

Depending on the make, model and size of your truck, the bed, or cargo box, is mounted to the frame by four to eight carriage bolts. Each bolt has a large, donut-shaped rubber washer located between the bed and the truck's frame that acts as a shock absorber for the truck's cargo box. If you have to remove the bed of a pickup truck, you simply need to remove the bolts and lift the bed off the truck.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the wires for the taillights. There should be a male-female plug located around the area between the truck's cab and bed.

    • 2

Crawl under the bed of the pickup and locate the carriage bolts that attach the bed to the truck's frame. Thoroughly soak all of the nuts with a spray lubricant. Wait 10 minutes.

    • 3

Loosen the nuts on the carriage bolts that attach the pickup's bed to the truck's frame with a socket wrench.

    • 4

Lift the bed off the frame far enough to clear the tires and remove it.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the nuts are still stuck after spraying them with lubricant, try attaching a pair of vise grips to the heads (top) of the carriage bolts, locking them into place with the handles between the ridges of the bed. If the nuts still won't budge, you can cut the bolts with a torch. An easier solution is to remove the bolt heads with a drill. From the top, drill precisely into the center of the bolt head with a drill bit of the same size as the bolt's shank. The head should fall off, and the bolt can then be pushed through with a punch.
