Maya 3D Tutorial
Learning different animation or 3D software is often challenging. Starting the process with basic geometric shapes allows the user to practice with the many different tools available, such as the "Edit Mesh" > "Extrude" feature. Choosing basic objects such as vases and inserting flowers from the Maya Paint Effects tool allows the user to select different features like brushes as well as selecting different flower types from the library browser. Taking time to learn the different facets of the Maya 3D program enables the user to proceed to more challenging scenarios and create a myriad of 3D views and scenes.

1
Click on the "Polygon" tab and open a cylinder shape. Keep in mind the Attributes Editor window is displayed on the screen and you can adjust the inputs for features such as Translate, Rotate or Scales. Make sure the Visibility and the Keep Faces Together feature is turned on in the Attributes Editor window displayed on the right side of your screen. If the Keep Faces Together feature is in the off mode, the shape's face divides into grid-like sections.
-
2
Grab the face of the object with the cursor and click on "Edit Mesh" > "Extrude" to activate. A handle appears at the top of the object's face. Pull up on the handle with the cursor to extrude the object, which is then reshaped uniformly.
-
-
3
Click on the inputs in the channel box display window. Scroll down to the division tab. By default, when you extrude the face, you get a division of one. Click on the division in the Attributes Editor and go into the cylinder's shape view area on your screen. Drag the mouse from left to right to increase the divisions. For this project, make eight divisions. The highlighted division lines will appear within the
base of the polygon cylinder shape.
-
4
Click on and open the "Edit Mesh" > "Smooth Edge Loop Tool." Make sure the Keep Faces Together tool on the drop-down menu has a check. The top lid will begin to separate from the original base view of the polygon cylinder shape.
-
5
Open the "Mesh" > "Smooth" tool. Adjust the inputs in the Attribute Editor's screen such as in the Translate and Scale bar to your desired shape. The center base of the vase is deleted. The shape will appear donut-like with a large hole in the center.
-
6
Create a separate cylinder shape. Add 40 divisions to the shape as in Step 3. Grab the shape and float it above the existing shape. Delete the lower face. The new cylinder shape will appear flat-like on the screen. This step is necessary to fit the cylinder into the adjusted base shape from Step 5.
-
7
Drop the flat cylinder into the center opening of the base shape. The open vase appears. If you choose to add an overall texture such as Black Lambert to the vase, make it paintable by clicking "Paint Effects" > "Make Paintable." Activate the "Paint on Paintable Objects" tab in the drop-down menu.
-
8
Choose the flowers for the vase, such as daisies, by clicking on "Paint Effects" > "Get Brush." The illuminated lines will have disappeared at this point. Select the brush type and flowers by clicking "Brush" > "DaisySmall." Keep in mind the Attribute Editor window is displayed with the different brush types for the daisy. Scale the flowers up to your desired size, such as 5, to finish the flower vase.
