How to Plan for a Baby Financially thumbnail
Having a baby can be a fulfilling experience.

One area that you should consider when preparing to have a child is your financial situation. Having a baby is expensive, and if you are not prepared for the cost of raising a child, it may cause problems. Always plan for a baby financially.

Instructions

    • 1

Calculate the actual cost of the birth. Check into what your insurance will and will not cover. Determine what you will have to pay out-of-pocket, and if you can afford to have a baby at all with your current income and insurance.

    • 2

Decide if one parent will stop working after the baby is born if both parents currently work. Remember that this will decrease the overall household income -- possibly a great deal. Estimate what the household income will be after the baby is born and start living on this amount well in advance of having the baby.

    • 3

Create a budget. Track your spending to determine where your money is going. Compare this to what your income will be after the baby is born. Plan to cut down on at least some of your expenses to budget for baby costs. Set aside specific amounts for each category in which you spend money, making sure to include baby-related expenses.

    • 4

Only buy what is necessary for the baby before birth. Don't overspend on the baby just because you feel like it. Save the extra money for diapers, formula, and other expenses that inevitably follow once the baby is born.

    • 5

Purchase life insurance and disability insurance if you don't have it. Remember that if the worst happens, you will need some way take care of your baby. Consider insurance for both parents; if one passes away, the other will likely need to pay for childcare and other unplanned expenses.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remember to budget for childcare if both parents plan to continue working after the baby is born.

  • Plan for the cost of a baby before you choose to get pregnant or as early as possible in case of an accidental pregnancy.
