How to Clean a Pressurized Fuel Injector

Fuel injectors should be cleaned on a regular basis.

Vehicle fuel injectors must remain in good condition; if they are dirty it can cause blockages. Blockages can make the engine become less economical, causing it to work less efficiently. Fuel injectors can be cleaned in or out of the vehicle.

Things You'll Need

• Fuel injector cleaning fluid
• Protective clothes
• Protective gloves

Instructions

1. Prepare by gathering all implements. It is a good idea to put on protective clothing such as overalls and gloves. Keep all pets and young children away from the work area.

2. Switch the engine off and make sure no other electrical outlets are on inside the vehicle.

3. Open the hood of the car and find the fuel injectors.

4. Take the fuel pump out to prevent fuel leakage. Attach the pressurized solvent solution to the injector and switch on the engine. Release the solvent so it runs right through the engine.

5. Turn off the engine and disconnect the fuel injector cleaner kit. Turn the engine on and listen to how it sounds. The engine should be running smoother than it was before. You can run the solvent through the engine again. You can do this three times. If, after the third time, the engine is still not running smoothly, then you will have to take the vehicle to a professional to clean the fuel injectors. As of 2010, this service can typically cost between $30 and $50 to carry out.
