Motorcycle chain

On motorcycles with a rear chain drive, you have two options to complete the chain. One way is with a master link and clip. The other way is by riveting the chain. Riveting provides a stronger link than using a master link.

Things You'll Need

  • Riveting-type master link
  • Spinning-type riveting tool, riveting driver or peening punch
  • Heavy hammer (sledge hammer)
  • 15 or 16 oz. hammer

Instructions

  1. Riveting Tool with Spinner

    • 1

Insert the riveting link pins into the two ends of the chain.

    • 2

Put link side of riveting link over the two ends of the master link. Ensure that it is pressed down as far as it can go.

    • 3

Place the riveting tool over one of the pins. The tool should clamp on either side of one of the pins.

    • 4

Spin the handle on the riveting tool clockwise until it stops.

    • 5

Repeat steps 3 and 4 with the second pin.

    Hammer-type Riveting Tool

    • 6

This method requires two people. Place the master link on the chain following the first two steps listed in the section above.

    • 7

Hold the heavy hammer tightly against the back of one of the pins.

    • 8

Place the riveting driver or peening punch against the pin with the heavy hammer on the back, and hammer the riveting driver or peening punch with the smaller hammer. Do this until the pin has mushroomed over the link.

    • 9

Repeat steps 2 and 3 for the second pin.
