How to Replace the Rear Brakes on a TRX 400EX

The Honda TRX 400EX is a high-performance race quad with a 399-cc four-stroke liquid-cooled engine. The rear brakes are disc brakes and are located in the center of the rear axle next to the differential on the opposite side of the drive chain. The rear brakes on this ATV are going to be changed the same way as any other disc brakes. The bolt size on the caliper will be different between models, but the process will be the same for all 400EX models.

Instructions

    • 1

Park the 400EX on flat ground in a well-lit area. Allow the brake rotor and caliper to completely cool before proceeding.

    • 2

Remove the two bolts from the right and left side of the caliper using the ratchet set. The bolts are facing the rear wheel in clear view. Pull the caliper off the rotor.

    • 3

Pull the two brake pads from the caliper. Place the ATV brake tool into the caliper so the the metal plate is on the opposite side of the piston in the caliper. Make sure that the push arm on the brake tool is in the center of the piston.

    • 4

Turn the knob on the brake tool clockwise until the piston is forced into the caliper's frame. Turn the knob counterclockwise until the push arm retracts, and then remove the tool from the caliper.

    • 5

Insert the new brake pads into the caliper. Place the caliper onto the rotor, and push down until the mounting holes line up. Insert the securing bolts, and tighten them until they are snug.
