How to Torque an Allen Key

How to Torque an Allen Key thumbnail
Allen keys come in different sizes.

An Allen key is a brand of hex key. There are other manufacturers of hex keys, but the terms "Allen" and "hex" are interchangeable for these tools. Allen keys are generally L-shaped with a hexagonal-shaped head on each end. Torque, or tighten, an Allen key by hand with one end of the handle. For deep-set hex bolts, the long end can be inserted into the head and the short shaft can become the handle for tightening.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the short end of the L-shaped key snugly into the head of the bolt to be tightened.

    • 2

Grasp the other end of the key, the longer shaft of the L-shape, with your hand and turn in a clockwise direction.

    • 3

Hand-tighten, being careful not to strip the end of the key or the head of the bolt.

Tips & Warnings

  • For a deep-set hex bolt, insert the longer end of the L-shaped key into the head of the bolt. Tighten the bolt with the short end or shaft.

  • A hex key handle can be bought to put over the end of the key for tightening, but it may cause the key to strip the head of the bolt.
