How to Cut Flexible Radiator Hose

Flexible radiator hoses allow the coolant inside your car to be circulated between the engine block and the radiator. Having a flexible hose, rather than a rigid setting or coupling, allows for radiators to be easily changed out and serviced when needed. These hoses are usually held in place by a pair of hose clamps at either end. Cutting flexible radiator hose isn't difficult, but needs to be done in the right way to avoid damage to the engine. Make sure the engine is completely cool if the flexible radiator hose you want to cut is currently installed.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the radiator cap from the engine by turning counterclockwsie.

    • 2

Drain the radiator. Otherwise, when you cut the flexible radiator hose, coolant will spill everywhere. To drain the radiator, place a drain pan underneath the radiator drain plug located at the bottom of the radiator. Unscrew the plug, using the pliers if needed. Allow the coolant inside to drain.

    • 3

Loosen the hose clamps at either end of the flexible radiator hose. These may either unscrew, or need to be pinched shut with a pair of pliers before they can be removed.

    • 4

Insert a new blade into the utility knife.

    • 5

Slice the radiator hose along the axis of the hose. Pull the flexible radiator hose off the connections to the radiator and the engine.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never pull flexible radiator hose off of the engine. Rust can sometimes bond a flexible radiator hose to the engine block. By pulling off the hose, you can damage the hose nipple, necessitating costly engine repairs.

  • Dispose of used radiator fluid properly.
