Sisal Rope Braiding Instructions

Sisal Rope Braiding Instructions thumbnail
Sisal rope lasts longer than carpet, making it ideal for cat scratching posts.

Sisal rope is a tough, woody rope often used in cat scratching posts. While you can purchase cat toys with sisal rope braids built in, it is cheaper to make your own braids. Sisal rope braids can be sewn or glued onto scratching posts to make the carpeted surface last longer and to give your cat more hours of scratching entertainment.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on your protective gloves so you don't get splinters from the rope.

    • 2

Gather all three pieces of sisal rope together, and make sure the ends are even.

    • 3

Secure the rope pieces by wrapping duct tape around one end, or tying one end to a stationary post (e.g., doorknob or bed post).

    • 4

Take the right end strand and cross it over the middle strand.

    • 5

Take the left end strand and cross it over the middle strand.

    • 6

Continue crossing right and left strands over the middle strand until you have braided the full length of rope.

    • 7

Tie a knot at the end of your rope to secure it, or wrap the end with duct tape.
