How to Shut Off the "Service Engine Soon" Light

The "service engine soon" light on your automobile is controlled by an onboard diagnostics module called an OBDII. The OBDII constantly monitors engine conditions and notifies you if there is an issue. Unfortunately, the OBDII does not display exactly what is wrong. It displays "service engine soon." Once you replace the defective part, the light stays on until the OBDII completes an additional series of diagnostics. However, you can take a quicker process to turn off the light.

Instructions

    • 1

Plug the OBDII code reader into the OBDII port (usually located below the steering column on the driver's side of the vehicle).

    • 2

Turn the ignition key to the "auxiliary" position to turn on the OBDII code reader and the OBDII port.

    • 3

Go to "Check codes" and reference the code that shows on the screen of the OBDII code reader with the code book. The code book tells you which part to replace.

    • 4

Turn off the ignition key, remove the OBDII reader and replace the broken part according to the code book.

    • 5

Plug the OBDII code reader into the OBDII port again.

    • 6

Turn the ignition key to the "auxiliary" position to turn on the OBDII code reader and the OBDII port.

    • 7

Select "clear codes" on the OBDII reader. This clears the codes and forgoes the additional diagnostics that would turn the light off naturally after approximately 50 miles driving.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can purchase an inexpensive OBDII code reader and code book at most auto part retailers.
