How to Convert Gold Bullion from Grams to Ounces
Gold, silver and other precious metals are weighed according to a scale referred to as Troy weight. Believed to be named after a system of weights and measures that flourished in Troyes, France, during the middle ages, Troy weight is slightly different than the standard weight system we use every day. In Troy weight, there are 31.1 grams per ounce, rather than 28, and there are 12 oz. in a Troy pound, rather than 16. Although this may sound confusing, it is easy to learn. It is also the standard measure of weight for precious metals around the world.

Open your digital scale and prepare to weigh your gold. Place the collection tray in its position on top of the scale and turn on the power. Check to make sure that the scale is set to grams, rather than grains or pennyweight, and that the weight reads "0.00." You can switch between grams and other options by pressing the "Mode" button.

Place your gold in the collection tray. The scale will automatically calculate how much the gold weighs. The weight will be displayed on the scale's digital read out, represented in grams. Make note of this number.

Use a calculator to divide the number of grams by the amount of grams that make up a Troy ounce. In other words, divide the weight of your gold by 31.1 to estimate the number of troy ounces your gold weighs. If you would like a more precise measurement, divide the weight of your gold by 31.103 grams per ounce. This will tell you exactly how many Troy ounces worth of gold you have.

Tips & Warnings
Because not all gold is 24K pure gold, you can further refine your calculations by factoring in the percentage of pure gold. For example, 14K gold contains 58 percent gold and 42 percent other metals. In this case, you could multiply your Troy weight by 0.58 to determine your pure gold Troy weight.
