How to Find a Grid Ref

How to Find a Grid Ref thumbnail
Find an exact grid reference by using the USNG Google Maps application.

The United States National Grid (USNG) is an alphanumeric system of reference that pinpoints an exact location on any map of the United States. According to the Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI), the advances in modern mobile and satellite technology have called for a reliable and consistent ground mapping system. The result is the USNG. You can find any grid reference, including U.K. Ordinance Survey grid references, on the Internet.

Instructions

  1. U.S. Grid Reference

    • 1

Open Internet Explorer and visit the U.S. National Grid Google Maps website. The website uses the Google Maps application and allows you to find a full USNG reference by either clicking on the map or typing in an address.

    • 2

Click the "+" button to zoom in to the area of the map that you want to find the grid reference for. By default the map displays a zoomed-out image of the United States. Click on the arrow buttons to slide the map left, right, up and down. Similarly, click and drag the mouse pointer to navigate the map.

    • 3

Left-click on the exact location once you have zoomed in to the surrounding area. The USNG grid reference appears in a small pop-up window. Copy and paste the grid reference if you need to use it elsewhere.

    • 4

Type in an address or city to zoom immediately to that location. You can then move the map to find an exact position. Left-click on the location to reveal its precise USNG grid reference, which looks like the example "17S MD 51592 65334."

    U.K. Grid Reference

    • 5

Open Internet Explorer and navigate to the Nearby Google Maps website. The Nearby map application allows you to click and reveal U.K. Ordinance Survey grid references.

    • 6

Click and drag the sliders and press the arrow buttons on the left-hand side of the map window to explore the map. Click on the "+" or "-" buttons to zoom in and out of the map.

    • 7

Left-click on a precise location to reveal its U.K. Ordinance Survey reference which looks like "NZ 0669 6563" or "ST 4561 1888."
