How to Soundproof an Apartment Wall

Sound carries well through apartment walls.

There are soundproofing solutions that require installation of additional drywall, fiberglass insulation and even concrete paneling, but these are not feasible for the temporary renter. Acoustic foam, however, provides an inexpensive fix. With a couple simple tools and a few slabs of foam, you can soundproof your apartment walls.

Things You'll Need

• Acoustic foam (several panels)
• Utility knife
• Stud finder
• Pencil
• Electric drill
• Phillips drill bit
• 3-inch drywall screws

Instructions

1. Cut your acoustic foam panels to size using a utility knife. Covering an entire wall with the foam will reduce noise to a minimum. Mounting several panels along the edges and in the corners of shared walls will provide significant noise reduction.

2. Locate the studs within the wall using an electronic stud finder. Lightly mark stud locations with a pencil.

3. Mount the foam panels using an electric drill and 3-inch drywall screws. Drill the screws about halfway in and avoid sinking them, as they will rip through the foam.

4. Repeat the above steps for each shared wall for increased soundproofing.

Tips & Warnings

• Depending on your leasing agreement, you may be required to notify your landlord before mounting the foam panels. As a courtesy, also notify your neighbors or roommates.

• For more discreet installation, use tack nails and a small hammer for mounting purposes.

• Always mount using wall studs. Failure to do so may result in damage to the apartment walls and costly repairs.
