This knot will never slip and can always be untied.

From Quick Guide: Guide to Knots
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make a small loop 18 to 24 inches from the end of the rope. This loop is called the hole.

  2. Step 2

Bring the end of the rope up through the hole, around the rope, and back down into the hole.

  3. Step 3

    Pull the knot tight.

Tips & Warnings
  • When the knot is snug, you'll have a loop that will not tighten and a knot that holds well but is easy to undo.
  • Remember: The rabbit comes out of the hole, goes around the tree and runs back down the hole again.

on 2/14/2006 It is important to create your hole in the correct way. The loose end of the rope needs to come from underneath the hole, otherwise the knot will pull loose.

One way to do this is to hold the length of rope in your left hand, grab the middle of the rope with your right and twist it half a turn away from you (clockwise.)

on 11/22/2005 After the knot is completed, you can turn it around and you will see two ropes crisscrossed, like an X, at 90 degree angles. If you pull one of them down toward the part below the bowline, then you are "breaking the back." No matter how tight the line gets, this is a sure way to always get the knot undone.
