It's simple to record one television show while watching another with DirecTV DVR. There are a couple of ways to begin recording a show you want to watch later. You can schedule the DVR to record it or you can turn it on and hit the "Record" button. Once the show is being recorded, you're free to change the channel and watch another show. In fact, you can even record the show you watch at the same time the DVR is recording your other show.

Step 1

Press "Menu" and then "Smart search" on the remote. Using the remote, input the first several letters of the name of the program you want to record until it appears in the search results. Locate your show from the search results. Highlight it with the arrow keys and hit the "Select" button. From the next menu you can press to record the show once or to record the entire series. Press "Done" when you have finished.

Step 2

Change the channel to the show you wish to watch. While you watch this show, the DVR will record your other show. You can change channels, pause, record your current show or turn the receiver off while the DVR is recording.

Step 3

Push the "Record" button on the remote to record the show you are watching. This button has an "R" inside a red circle and "Rec" next to it. Again you can choose to record the show only once or record the entire series. Press "OK" to return to your show. An "R" inside a red circle shows next to the name of the show being recorded in the guide.
