How to Set Up Chat Room Bots
Talking to a robot may sound like something out of a science-fiction movie, but artificial communicators are already here among us. Chat room bots are programs that serve to interact with human users in a specific way. Many bots are used as artificial administrators that can ban troublesome users. Some bots answer basic customer service questions. Others do their best to pass as human, engaging in conversations and hosting games. To set up a bot, you will first need to download the bot's software. Chat room bots vary greatly in purpose, but their basic setup is fairly uniform.

1
Launch your bot software. Though all user interfaces will be different, there should be an option reading "Create New Bot" or "New." Click or select this button.
-
2
Type the bot's name into the field provided. A good name for your bot will depend on its function. If you are using the bot for administrative purposes, something as simple as "Admin" or "AdminBot" can work just fine. However, if you are trying to pass off your bot as a human user, obviously it will be best to choose a name that fits that purpose.

3
Enter the IP address and port number of the chat room into the fields provided. A password may also be necessary if you are connecting your bot to a private chat room. After you have entered in this information, click "Connect."

4
Adjust the settings for your bot as needed. These options will vary greatly depending on what sort of bot you have set up. You can specify user rules (such as specific words that can get a user kicked out), write proper responses to questions, instruct the bot to keep a log of all conversations, or even create interactive chat games.

Tips & Warnings
Not all chat rooms are friendly towards bots. Some have very strict policies against using bots. Thoroughly check your chat room's rules of conduct before connecting a bot. Getting caught running an unwelcome bot can often result in a ban.
