How to Tie a Hangman's Noose

How to Tie a Hangman's Noose thumbnail
The hangman's noose is used by fishers.

The hangman's noose originates from years ago as the type of knot used to execute prisoners. It is also common in fishing, with fishers using this knot to keep the lure on their line. The knot can withstand the tension of the fish pulling when it is caught. It is excellent for terminal tackle, swivel and hooks. Whether using the hangman's noose for a costume party gag or to fish with no experience is necessary to learn how to tie this knot.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a loop at the end of the fishing line or rope. Leave approximately 38 inches of length between the end of the line and the loop. If this knot is being used for fishing be sure to run the line through the eye of the lure.

    • 2

Lay the rope flat and make it into an "U" shape. Take an end and bring it toward the bottom of the "U" shape, passing it under the doubled part of the rope.

    • 3

Wrap the free end around the noose five times, winding to the top.

    • 4

Pull the free end of the loop through the top. Make sure there is a bit of extra rope left over. If there is not enough line left over there is the chance that the knot could slip when you tighten it.

    • 5

Tighten the knot. Hold the free end in place and pull on the end of the line connected to the top.
