Take caution whenever opening any cell phone.

One of the most common repairs for the iPhone 2G is a replacement digitizer. Unfortunately, the digitizer on the iPhone 2G cannot be repaired without replacing the glass and LCD screen as well. All these parts are fused together and cannot be replaced by themselves. Most iPhone 2G glass replacement kits come with the outer glass, digitizer, LCD and tool kit.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the phone off and take the SIM card out of the phone. The SIM card is located in the slot on the bottom of the iPhone 2G.

    • 2

Remove the antenna cover from the phone. This is the black cover on the back of the phone. Insert the light blue removal tool into the space between the black plastic and the front of the phone.

    • 3

Unscrew the three Phillips screws on the back of the iPhone. Put the screws in a safe place. Use the pick-like tool to pull the back case away from the iPhone.

    • 4

Unplug the earbud jack cable and the antenna cables from the circuit board of the phone. Unscrew the three screws holding the circuit board in place and remove the battery. If the battery has not ever been taken out, there will be glue around the battery holding it in. Remove all other cables that are running to the phone's circuit board before continuing.

    • 5

Detach the screen from the frame by unscrewing the eight screws located on the display assembly. Pull the frame away from the display. Be careful not to damage the frame.

    • 6

Place the new class, digitizer and LCD screen inside the frame and screw the display back to the frame with the eight screws you removed earlier. Connect the cables from the screen to the circuit board, replace the battery and screw the circuit board back into place. Place the silver back cover back on the phone and screw it in place. Place the antenna cover back on the phone.

    • 7

Put the SIM card in the iPhone and turn the phone on to test the display.

Tips & Warnings

  • Each step should be done as gently as possible. The phone can be damaged if the screws are too tight or any part of the phone is damaged during the process.
