How to Update Auto GPS Systems

When purchasing a new vehicle, buyers often add accessories and features to increase its value and functionality. Available upgrades may include seat warmers, a high-quality stereo system or a GPS navigation system. GPS systems enable drivers to find locations in unfamiliar areas by providing turn-by-turn directions. Map updates for vehicle GPS systems are typically released once a year. Many vehicles use NAVTEQ maps for their systems, and updates can be purchased from their online store. Updates are also available from the GM Navigation Disc Center website. After the update DVD arrives, it can be installed on your vehicle's system.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the NAVTEQ website, and click "Store" at the top of the page. In the "Update Your Map" menu, choose "Built-in, Factory Installed." Select your car's make, model and year.

For the GM Navigation Disc Center store, click "Search," then choose your car's make, model and year. Click "Search" again.

    • 2

Click the link to the online shop, where the update can be purchased. This link only appears for some vehicles. For others, the latest map update is shown automatically.

    • 3

Click "Add to Cart," then "Checkout." Supply your billing and shipping information. The map update arrives on a DVD.

    • 4

Turn on your vehicle's engine and navigation system. Eject the current map disc, if there is one. Insert the new DVD into the disc drive.

    • 5

Enter the authentication code into the system, if prompted to do so. This code is typically located on the DVD packaging, or on a slip of paper inside the package. If the code is entered correctly, the map update begins.

    • 6

Eject the DVD from the system when the update finishes.

Tips & Warnings

  • If NAVTEQ or the GM Navigation Disc Center does not supply updates for your vehicle, contact your local dealership. Some updates must be purchased directly from the dealer.
