How to Replace an IAC Valve

How to Replace an IAC Valve thumbnail
Replace your IAC valve when it becomes damaged, to ensure the vehicle runs efficiently.

The IAC valve is an important component within your vehicle. The idle control valve regulates the vehicle idle speed at any given time. The valve works as it opens a bypass circuit, allowing the air to bypass the throttle. As the valve increases the air that passes through the circuit, the throttle increases the idle speed. If the valve becomes clogged or damaged, it's important to replace it, immediately, to ensure your vehicle engine runs efficiently.

Instructions

    • 1

Park the vehicle, and allow it ample time to cool. Components should be cool enough to touch.

    • 2

Open the hood of the vehicle, and locate the IAC valve. The valve is found on the back of the throttle body, beside the firewall. Refer to your vehicle repair manual for the exact location and a diagram.

    • 3

Disconnect the electrical connector. Squeeze the release tabs on each side of the connector, and pull. Place the connector to the side.

    • 4

Remove the two bolts securing the IAC valve to the vehicles throttle body. Use an 8-mm socket, paired with a socket wrench. Turn the wrench, counterclockwise, until the bolts are removed.

    • 5

Remove the valve from the vehicle, by pulling it straight. Discard the old valve. Position the replacement valve, so the boltholes on the valve and mount match up. Replace each bolt, and tighten, using the socket wrench. Plug the electrical connector into the new valve. The connector will snap into place, signaling that it is secure. The valve is now replaced. Close the hood of the vehicle.
