Homemade Bat Wings With Umbrellas

Making homemade costumes allows you to turn everyday items into realistic, custom looks. A plain black outfit can be transformed into a bat costume with the addition of wings fashioned from the parts of an old black umbrella. Some wire cutters and a few other household tools are all you need. You'll be spreading your bat wings around the neighborhood in no time.

Things You'll Need

  • Black umbrella
  • Wire cutters
  • Scissors
  • Thread
  • Needle
  • Cut off the middle wires, called ribs, from a basic black umbrella using wire cutters.

  • Cut around the top of the umbrella to remove the pole.

  • Cut the remaining umbrella in half with scissors. This will separate the umbrella into two distinct bat wings.

  • Cut off any remaining wire that may be poking out.

  • Sew the wings onto your costume using black thread. If you sew one end of the wing onto the arm of the costume, and continue sewing along the wing until you reach the back of the costume, the person wearing the costume will be able to stretch out the wings and pretend to fly.
