How to Find Your Tag Number

You can find your vehicle's tag number without your license plate.

Vehicles registered for use on the road must have a tag number. The tag number identifies your vehicle's registration and is needed for some insurance claims. If you want to look up your tag number to check your car's history or to order replacements, the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and other resources offer online, in-person and over the phone solutions, none of which require a fee.

Instructions

1. Perform an online search. Go to your state's DMV website. Enter your license plate number. If your vehicle is registered out of state, perform an online search at that state's DMV website. Enter identifying information such as a driver's license and a copy of your vehicle's title and registration into the look-up system.

2. Visit a state DMV office and obtain the information from a representative.

3. Check insurance documents. Check your proof of insurance card, which may contain your tag number, focusing on the section that lists your vehicle information.

4. Look on your vehicle's registration card issued by the DMV.
