How to Increase Baseboard Radiator Heat Efficiency

So long as they are working properly, few of us pay attention to our heating systems. However, the efficiency of the baseboard radiators can be improved with a simple maintenance routine. The more efficient your baseboard radiant heater is, the less you will spend on heat. A little attention goes a long way toward improving the efficiency of baseboard radiator heat.

Things You'll Need

• Vacuum cleaner
• Upholstery vacuum cleaner attachment

Instructions

1. Vacuum your radiator fins using your vacuum's upholstery attachment. You should do this at least once a year, at the beginning of the heating season. Dust left on the radiator fins acts as an insulator and reduces the amount of heat the radiator can transfer into the room.

2. Close your radiator vents in the summer and open them as far as they will go in the winter. Closing the vents helps keep the radiator clean when it is not in use. Opening them allows as much heat as possible to radiate into the room.

3. Move carpets, curtains and furniture away from radiators. Radiators need adequate air flow at both the top and bottom of the unit to work efficiently.

Tips & Warnings

• Hire a professional to inspect and clean your furnace once a year. This inspection should include a thorough cleaning, thermostat testing and furnace motor oiling.
