Unless the feature is supported by your DVR service provider, transferring videos from a DVR to a PC is not a matter of transferring the video file from the DVR to the PC. The most common method of backing up videos saved in a DVR to a PC is to dub the videos from the DVR to the PC. The PC can be used as a video recording device, just like VCR. The Motorola QIP 7216-1 is a high-definition DVR. However, in dubbing videos from this DVR to a PC, you're going to use the device's standard definition option.

Things You'll Need

  • External video capture card
  • Composite video cable
  • 3.5mm Stereo male to RCA male Y cable
  • Windows Live Movie Maker

Instructions

    • 1

Load the software CD that came with the video capture card into the computer. The software's installation wizard should automatically launch. Follow the wizard's prompts to install the video capture card software onto the PC. You only have to install the software one time. After this initial setup you do not have to perform this step again.

Insert one end of the composite video cable (also known as the yellow A/V cable) into the yellow jack labeled "Video Out" on the back of the DVR. Connect the other end of the cable into the yellow A/V In jack on the video capture card.

Plug the white RCA audio plug, located at one end of the stereo Y cable, into the white A/V Out jack labeled "Audio Left" on the back of the DVR. Plug the red RCA audio plug into the red A/V Out jack labeled "Audio Right" on the back of the DVR.

Connect the stereo plug, located on the other end of the stereo Y cable, into the "Line In" (blue) stereo jack on the back of the PC.
