How to Purchase DNA Kits for Indian Heritage
Many people who participate in ethnic DNA tracing discover their ethnicity is more varied than ever imagined. Not only can ethnic DNA testing trace your family's roots to continents all over the world, it can also pinpoint whether or not you are part of a more specific ethnic group, and what percent of your DNA stems from that ethnicity. DNA kits are available online to determine your Indian, or Native American, ancestry. The only information required to order is your full name, address and credit or debit card number.

Submit a DNA kit from DNA Tribes to find out your Indian heritage. Unlike many DNA testing companies, DNA Tribes will indicate what part of the Americas your Indian ancestors are from. Native Americans are considered part of the North Amerindian, Athabaskan, Arctic, Ojibwa and Salishan groups; all settled in parts of what is now the United States, including Alaska. The test provides a percentage of each ethnicity, including Indian, that makes up your DNA. DNA kits are available for order online with a debit or credit card. As of 2010, DNA kits from DNA Tribes cost $139.99 for a 15-Marker Kit and $209.99 for a 21-Marker Kit.

Order an ethnic DNA test from Ancestry By DNA. Ancestry By DNA has two specific tests-- the Ancestry By DNA test and Lineage DNA Testing. The Ancestry By DNA test determines whether you belong to one or more of the four population groups-- European, indigenous American (which includes Indians from North and South American tribes), Sub-Saharan African and East Asian. The test breaks down what percentage each of those ethnicities make up in you. For example, 11% of your DNA could be from indigenous American people. This test, as of 2010, costs $295. Then there is the Lineage DNA test, which determines the exact geographic origins and haplogroup of your maternal or paternal side. The haplogroups A and C are considered the ancestors of indigenous peoples in the Americas. Cost varies between $99 to $259, depending upon the DNA kit selected (as of 2010). DNA kits are available for order online with a debit or credit card.

Take a DNA test to determine your Indian heritage as part of the National Geographic's "The Geographic Project." To participate in the project, order the DNA kit from their website, swab the inside of your check and submit the results. As of 2010, the cost is $99.95. DNA kits are available for order online with a debit or credit card. Once the results are analyzed, you will discover the migration paths of your maternal or paternal ancestors. If you are of Indian descent, the results will show the initial movements of your ancestors from East Asia. This project will not give you a percentage breakdown of your ethnic makeup, or allow you to learn about the ethnicity of more recent relatives like your great grandparents.

Discover your Indian heritage by ordering a DNA test from DNA Ancestry Project. This company offers a DNA 44-Marker Test. All 44 markers are analyzed and compared to the Genebase. Any DNA match helps to determine the migration path of your ancestors, and whether or not your ancestors were indigenous Americans. In addition, DNA Ancestory Project allows participants to access their different genetic geneology management tools to find long-lost relatives by surname. DNA kits are available for order online with a debit or credit card, and cost between $238 and $318, depending on the DNA kit selected (as of 2010).

Tips & Warnings
When ordering a kit, the more markers a kit uses (e.g., 15-marker or 44-marker), the more accurate it can be.
No kit will be able to pinpoint the exact Native American tribe your ancestors may be from. DNA Tribes, however, will pinpoint the region of North America your ancestors resided in, which will help you narrow down possible tribes.
