1
Decide on the purpose your garage will fill. A garage that simply protects your car and is used for storage is simpler to design than a band practice space.
-
2
Measure the available space in your garage. You will also need to measure your your vehicle to know how much space it will take up in your garage. The leftover space will be where you can install shelving or sound proofing.

3
Analyze your needs. For example, if you have hundreds of books to store, you will need shelves. If you want to create a workshop, you will need a hanging rack for your tools, a table and other supplies.
-
4
Draw a floor plan of your garage on a sheet of graph paper. A simple way to do this is by making each square equal one foot. Use your measurements to make an accurate drawing of your available space. Make sure to mark off the space the vehicle will occupy and allow two or three feet on either side (if possible) to allow ease of movement and a safer entry when parking.
-
5
Use your drawing to plan the location of things your garage needs. Garages typically have unfinished sides which can be used to create built in shelves for books. High cabinets can be used to store objects while leaving space to move around under them.

6
Use lighting and colors to make the space look cool and be functional. You can also decorate with art to make your garage look less utilitarian and more like a living space.
