Prepare your hair. Trim longer hair with shears before using the clippers because longer hair will get caught in the blades and prevent them from functioning properly, according to CareFair.com. Make sure your hair is dry because wet hair can clog the blades. Read the instruction manual for your model of clippers because you will need to use a different blade for different lengths and types of hair.

Work slowly. Using clippers on your hair is not a speed test so don't rush or force the blades through your hair, according to the Peasridge Clipper Advice website. Your hand should simply guide the clippers in the right direction through your hair.
