How to Make a Sailor Shirt
For a costume party or Halloween, dressing up as a sailor is a fun option. The outfit requires only navy or white trousers, a sailor hat and the easy-to-make sailor shirt.
Things You'll Need
- Long-sleeved white v-neck shirt
- Scissors
- Needle and thread
- White fabric
- Navy blue piping
- Navy scarf
Instructions

1
Place the piece of white fabric on a table. Lay the v-neck shirt next to the fabric.
-
2
Cut a rectangle out of the fabric that is half as wide as the shirt and 12" long. To increase the thickness, sew two pieces the same size together and turn it right-side out.
-
-
3
Lay the shirt over the white fabric and trace the curve of the back of the neck. Cut along the curve.
-
4
Slide the rectangle of fabric inside the shirt and pin the center back of the fabric to the center back of the shirt. Pin the rest of the rectangle to the shirt. Stitch in place.
-
5
Turn the rectangle up over the back of the shirt so it hangs over the shirt as a collar. Add blue piping around the edge of the collar and cuffs of the shirt and tie a navy blue scarf loosely around the neck.

Tips & Warnings
A navy shirt and fabric with yellow piping and scarf can be used as an alternative. Add anchor appliques for more authenticity. Use a short-sleeved navy t-shirt with red fabric if you want the Popeye look.
Always be careful with needles and pins. Check the floor carefully after sewing.
